Harvest problems rarely happen at a convenient time.
A bearing that sounded a little rough in the spring can become a failed bearing when trucks are waiting. A worn auger can reduce capacity when you need to move grain. A dryer ignition problem that could have been addressed months earlier can suddenly become the reason harvest slows down.
That's why preparing your grain system shouldn't begin when the first combine enters the field.
A thorough pre-season grain system inspection in the spring, followed by another check before harvest, gives you time to identify worn components, make repairs, order parts, and test equipment before your operation needs to run at full capacity.

Why Start Grain System Maintenance in the Spring?
It's easy to think of grain-system maintenance as a pre-harvest job. But waiting until late summer can leave you with a much smaller window for repairs.
Starting in the spring gives you more time to inspect the complete system—from bins and grain legs to dryers, conveyors, electrical components, and unload equipment.
If you discover something that needs attention, you have time to deal with it instead of trying to make a rushed repair during harvest.
Think of your spring inspection as an opportunity to answer one important question:
If harvest started tomorrow, what would keep this system from doing its job?

Start With the Grain Bins
Before inspecting individual pieces of equipment, take a good look at the grain storage structures themselves.
Inspect Bin Sheets and Structural Components
Walk around each bin and look for visible signs of deterioration or damage.
Check bin sheets for:
Rust and corrosion
Holes or other visible damage
Weak or questionable seams
Small problems can become bigger ones, especially once a bin is loaded and the structure is under pressure.
Check Roof Panels, Vents, and Caps
Inspect the roof and its components for areas that could allow water into the bin.
Look at roof panels, vents, caps, and other openings for damage or signs of leaking. Water entering stored grain can create moisture problems and affect grain condition.
Inspect Doors, Latches, and Seals
Bin doors should close and secure properly.
Inspect doors, latches, and seals for wear or damage. If something doesn't fit, latch, or seal the way it should, spring is a much better time to address it than when you're preparing to fill the bin.
Look at Anchor Bolts and the Foundation
Check accessible anchor bolts and inspect the foundation for visible cracking or deterioration.
The bin itself may get most of the attention, but the structure underneath it matters too. If you notice significant structural concerns, have them evaluated rather than assuming they'll make it through another season.

Inspect Grain Handling Equipment
Your grain system is only as efficient as its slowest or least reliable component.
Grain legs, conveyors, augers, and unload systems can experience significant wear. Inspecting them before harvest helps identify potential bottlenecks and failures before you're depending on them every day.

Worn belts

Misaligned pulleys

Listen and watch for anything that doesn't look or operate normally when equipment is safely tested.
Conveyors and Augers
Augers and conveyors move a tremendous amount of material over their working lives, so wear should be expected.
Check auger flighting for excessive wear and inspect for misalignment or wobble.
On belt conveyors, look for tracking problems and inspect the belt's overall condition. Bearings and gearboxes should also receive attention.
A conveyor that keeps throwing a belt or an auger that's noticeably worn isn't likely to improve once harvest starts.
Unload Systems
Don't forget about the equipment responsible for getting grain back out of storage.
Inspect unload augers for wear and test drive systems and motors. Confirm that the unload system operates correctly before the bin is full and you need it.
Give Your Grain Dryer a Thorough Check
A grain dryer can become one of the hardest-working pieces of equipment on the farm during harvest.
Before you depend on it, inspect and service it.
Clean Burner Assemblies
Dirt and debris can accumulate around dryer components. Burner assemblies should be cleaned and inspected according to the manufacturer's procedures before seasonal operation.
Inspect Gas Lines and Valves
Gas-system components deserve careful attention.
Inspect gas lines and valves for signs of damage and leaks, following the manufacturer's safety and service procedures. If you suspect a fuel-system problem, have it addressed by someone qualified to perform the work.
Check the Ignition System
Verify that the ignition system is functioning properly.
A dryer that won't reliably ignite when you're trying to move wet grain can quickly become a bottleneck for everything upstream.
Inspect Fans and Housings
Inspect dryer fans and housings for visible damage, excessive buildup, or other issues that could interfere with operation.

Don't Skip Lubrication and Fluids
Some of the simplest maintenance tasks can make a major difference in equipment reliability.
Follow manufacturer recommendations and inspect lubrication points throughout the grain system.

Greasing applicable bearings
Checking gearbox oil levels
Inspecting oil condition
Replacing old or contaminated oil when needed
Keep in mind that different equipment has different lubrication requirements. More grease isn't automatically better, so follow the manufacturer's specifications for the equipment you're servicing.

Old grain, fines, dust, and debris shouldn't be allowed to accumulate indefinitely.

Inspect Aeration and Ventilation Systems
Good grain storage doesn't stop when grain enters the bin.
Aeration and ventilation equipment need to be ready to help you manage stored grain after harvest.
Inspect Transitions and Ducts
Look over transitions and accessible ductwork for damage, deterioration, loose components, or areas that may interfere with airflow.
Check Fan Blades
Inspect fan blades for damage, buildup, and other visible issues. Fan condition and balance can affect how the equipment operates.
If you notice unusual vibration or noise, don't simply assume it'll work itself out.
Inspect Aeration Controls
Look inside appropriate control areas for dust, corrosion, damage, or other visible concerns.
Problems with the fan itself aren't the only things that can prevent an aeration system from operating when you need it.
Check the Electrical System
Electrical issues can cause equipment downtime and create serious safety hazards.
Before harvest, electrical components throughout the grain system should be appropriately inspected.
Areas to check include:
Control panels
Wiring and connections
Starters
Relays
Overloads
Conduit
Emergency shutoffs
Look for damaged conduit or wiring, corrosion, excessive dust, loose connections, or components that show signs of trouble.
Emergency shutoffs should also be tested to verify that they operate correctly.
Electrical inspection and repair should be performed by qualified personnel where required. Always de-energize equipment and follow proper lockout/tagout procedures before servicing machinery.
Look for Moisture Problems Before Filling the Bin
Water and stored grain aren't a good combination.
During your spring and pre-harvest inspections, look for signs of water intrusion or persistent moisture around bins and grain-system components.
Potential warning signs may include:
Evidence of roof leaks
Damaged seals
Corrosion
Water around the foundation
Moisture inside an empty bin
Deteriorated areas around vents, transitions, or openings
Finding the source before filling the bin is far easier than dealing with wet grain afterward.
Review Safety Equipment and Procedures
Pre-season maintenance is also a good opportunity to review grain-system safety.
Inspect applicable guards, access points, ladders, emergency shutoffs, warning labels, and other safety components.
Make sure everyone who will be working around the grain system understands safe operating procedures, including lockout/tagout requirements and grain-bin-entry procedures.
Never enter a bin while grain is flowing, and never bypass guards or other safety devices to save time.
Harvest pressure can encourage shortcuts. Preparing equipment—and your team—before the season begins can help prevent them.
Then Do It Again Before Harvest
A spring inspection gives you time to make larger repairs and improvements. But equipment can sit for months between spring maintenance and harvest.
That's why a pre-harvest check is still important.
Before harvest begins, walk through the system again. Verify that repairs were completed, check fluid and lubrication needs, test equipment safely, inspect electrical controls, and make sure grain-handling, drying, aeration, and unload equipment are ready.
This final check isn't the time to discover everything that's wrong. Ideally, it's confirmation that the work you started months earlier has prepared the system for harvest.
Preventative Maintenance Helps Keep Harvest Moving
You can't prevent every breakdown.
But you can avoid entering harvest with problems that were already visible in April, May, or June.
A worn bearing, damaged bucket, leaking roof panel, questionable gearbox, or dryer problem may be relatively manageable when there's time to schedule service and obtain parts.
During harvest, that same problem can stop an entire grain system.
