Grain Bin Safety: Protecting the People Behind the Harvest

Grain bins are an essential part of many farming operations, but working around stored grain also comes with serious hazards.

Moving grain can trap a person in seconds. Bridged grain can collapse without warning. Augers and conveyors create entanglement hazards, while grain dust can affect breathing and, under the right conditions, contribute to fires or explosions.

That's why grain bin safety isn't something to think about only when there's a problem. It needs to be part of the way you operate every day.

Never Enter a Bin While Grain Is Flowing

This is one of the most important rules in grain bin safety:

Never enter a grain bin while grain is being loaded, unloaded, or otherwise moving.

Flowing grain can act much differently than a solid surface. When unloading equipment is operating, grain moving toward the discharge can pull a person down rapidly.

What looks manageable from above can become an emergency in seconds.

Before anyone enters a bin, equipment that could create a hazard—including augers and other grain-moving equipment—needs to be shut down and properly de-energized, locked out, and tagged out according to applicable safety procedures.

Never assume someone else knows you're inside.

Never Enter a Grain Bin Alone

When bin entry is necessary, there should be an appropriately equipped observer outside the bin who maintains communication with the person inside and is prepared to assist according to established rescue procedures.

A second person isn't simply there to "keep an eye on things." Proper bin-entry procedures require planning, communication, appropriate equipment, and people who understand what to do if something goes wrong.

Use the Proper Harness and Lifeline

Where stored grain presents an engulfment hazard, proper fall and engulfment protection can save a life.

A body harness and properly positioned lifeline—or other protection required for the particular situation—should be used according to applicable bin-entry requirements.

The equipment also needs to be used correctly. Simply owning a harness isn't enough.

Workers need to understand how the equipment works, how it should be secured, and what procedures to follow before entering the bin.

Stay Off Bridged or Crusted Grain

Stored grain doesn't always behave the way it appears from above.

Spoiled, crusted, or bridged grain can form what looks like a solid surface while hiding an empty space underneath. Stepping onto that surface can cause it to collapse.

Grain can also build up along bin walls and suddenly break loose, burying someone below.

Never walk on bridged grain, and don't enter underneath grain that has bridged or built up along the sides of a bin.

If something doesn't look right, don't climb in to investigate without an appropriate safe-entry procedure. A grain-quality problem isn't worth turning into a rescue situation.

Test the Atmosphere Before Entry

Engulfment isn't the only hazard inside a grain bin.

Stored or spoiling grain, fumigants, and other conditions can create hazardous atmospheres. Oxygen levels may also be unsafe.

Before entry, the atmosphere should be evaluated and tested as required for the conditions present, including oxygen and potential toxic or combustible hazards. If unsafe conditions are identified, appropriate ventilation and other required safety measures must be used before entry.

Don't rely on smell alone to tell you whether the air is safe.

Proper Grain Storage Is Also a Safety Practice

Good grain management isn't only about protecting crop quality. It can help prevent conditions that create additional hazards later.

Maintain Appropriate Moisture Levels

Grain going into storage at inappropriate moisture levels can increase the risk of spoilage, mold, heating, and crusting.

Proper drying before storage, followed by continued monitoring, helps maintain grain condition and can reduce the likelihood of problems that may eventually tempt someone to enter a bin to correct them.

Use Proper Aeration

Aeration is another important part of managing stored grain.

A properly designed and operated aeration system helps manage grain temperature and storage conditions. Drying, aeration, monitoring, and good management practices work together to protect the crop throughout storage.

Inspect Your Grain Bins

Grain bins and associated equipment should be inspected regularly.

Look for deterioration, damage, leaks, loose or damaged components, and other conditions that may affect safe operation. Ladders, access points, roofs, electrical components, conveyors, unload systems, and other equipment should also receive appropriate attention.

Catching a developing problem early is usually better than discovering it when the bin is full—or when you're trying to move grain during a busy season.

Practice Safe Grain-Handling Equipment Procedures

The hazards don't stop at the bin door.

Augers, conveyors, elevators, unload systems, motors, and other grain-handling equipment contain moving components capable of causing severe injuries.

Follow Lockout/Tagout Procedures

Before servicing equipment or entering an area where machinery could create a hazard, follow the appropriate lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedure.

Equipment should be de-energized and secured against unexpected startup before work begins.

Be Careful Around Moving Equipment

Keep clothing, hands, feet, hair, tools, and other items away from moving machinery. Loose clothing around augers, conveyors, and other equipment can create an entanglement hazard.

Guards and other safety devices are there for a reason. Don't bypass them for the sake of saving a few minutes.

Train Everyone Who Works Around Grain

Safety procedures only work when people understand them.

Anyone who works around grain storage and handling equipment should receive appropriate training for their responsibilities. That includes understanding equipment hazards, bin-entry procedures, lockout/tagout, emergency procedures, and the specific risks present at the facility.

Experience around grain doesn't eliminate risk. Good procedures and consistent training help manage it.

Don't Underestimate Grain Dust

Grain dust can create both respiratory and fire hazards.

Dust generated during grain handling can become airborne and accumulate throughout a facility. Good housekeeping and dust control are important parts of maintaining a safer grain operation.

Control Dust Accumulation

Keep grain-handling areas as clean as practical and maintain ventilation and dust-control systems appropriately.

Accumulated grain dust can become fuel for a fire or explosion when the right concentration and an ignition source are present.

Control Potential Ignition Sources

Hot bearings, overheated motors, electrical problems, welding, cutting, open flames, and other ignition sources can become especially dangerous around combustible grain dust.

Electrical equipment used in hazardous grain-handling locations needs to be appropriate for the environment, and hot work should follow applicable safety procedures.

Protect Yourself From Dust, Heat, and Other Health Hazards

Working around grain can expose people to dust, mold, heat, and other potentially hazardous conditions.

Appropriate respiratory protection may be necessary depending on the environment and work being performed. Workers should understand when respiratory protection is required and how to use it correctly.

Hot weather creates another concern.

During summer maintenance, bin work, and harvest, pay attention to heat conditions. Take appropriate breaks, stay hydrated, and know the warning signs of heat-related illness.

A job that normally feels routine can become much more difficult when you're working around hot equipment or inside a hot structure.

Prepare for an Emergency Before One Happens

No farmer expects a grain entrapment to happen on their operation. But waiting until someone is trapped to figure out what equipment you need or whom to call costs valuable time.

A grain safety plan should include emergency procedures, communication, trained personnel, appropriate rescue equipment, and coordination with local emergency responders.

The best grain-bin emergency is the one that never happens.

Proper moisture management, drying, aeration, equipment maintenance, housekeeping, worker training, lockout/tagout procedures, atmospheric testing, and safe bin-entry practices all contribute to a safer grain operation.

Most importantly, don't allow familiarity to turn into complacency.

You've worked too hard to build your operation to take unnecessary risks around stored grain.
